Mobile game interface design

USER INTERFACE DESIGN / INTERNSHIP / URAGA

CASE OVERVIEW

This is a mobile arcade game where the goal is to keep the main character, Sausage, safe from obstacles for as long as possible to earn points. Players can then use these in-game points to customize their character and unlock new Sausage variations.

DESIGN GOALS

Develop guidelines for an interface that is simple, playful, and subtly cartoonish, ensuring a cohesive and approachable visual style.

DESIGN PROCESS

ANALYSIS

I began my analysis by testing out the game demo myself to gain a deeper understanding of the product. From there, I created initial wireframe sketches and, throughout the process, examined the arcade game genre, its player base, and similar titles such as Pigeon Pop, Run Sausage Run, and Sausage Flip.

PROTOTYPING | VISUAL TREATMENT

In collaboration with the Game Designer and Lead Programmer, we established key guidelines before mapping out the user flow. The flow included the following screens: loading, main menu, character selection, gameplay, and scoreboard. I then created multiple design variations for each of these screens, as well as for additional interface elements such as buttons, cards, and carousels.

Selected designs have been put together in low-fidelity mockups and later – in an interactive prototype with selected colour palette and fonts.

OUTCOME

Established design guidelines with final prototype of interface design accelerated development process and eased playing experience.

About an year ago from finishing this project, I tried to improve final interface design following the same design requirements and guidelines.

WHAT HAVE I LEARNED

This project helped broaden my design thinking and strengthened my ability to collaborate effectively with other teams, tackling challenges for the same product while it was still in its early development stages.
